Course Summary
The TEMPO EMT & First Responder Refresher Course is based on the concept that all law enforcement authorities need tactical emergency medical training that acknowledges their unique occupational operating environment. This is not a SWAT based TEMS course that teaches principles or skills requiring the officer to carry a lot of specialized gear, work with a SWAT team, or be at an exceptional level of fitness. This course provides instructional principles and skills that can be used every day by front line patrol personnel, field investigators, and SWAT team members.
Offered through Hennepin County Medical Center’s Department of EMS Education, this course was developed under the leadership of Dr. Jeffrey Ho, a senior faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Ho has a unique skill set in addition to emergency medicine practice that includes operational and leadership backgrounds with military, EMS, and SWAT operations. He is an active peace officer in MN and is an internationally known expert for his research on Excited Delirium Syndrome, TASER devices, and Use of Force physiology. HCMC Tactical Medic instructors, Chris Maca and Rob Snyder, have extensive training in austere tactical law enforcement instruction and research. This team draws on all of this to provide the course attendees with reality based instruction and training.
This course covers all of the basic EMT& First Responder topics required for National Registry and Minnesota refresher certification and is taught by a cadre of well-qualified and unique faculty. The faculty collectively has decades of experience in emergency patient care, tactical EMS, and law enforcement operations. Available only to sworn law enforcement personnel, this course is unlike any standard EMT Refresher that you have attended. It will enable you to use the skills that you have developed and apply them specifically to your occupational setting in ways that you have never thought of. Following successful program completion, your certification is valid for a period of 2 years but the skills you earn will be helpful to you and your partners for your career.
